Community Services

FIRE

Washington Township is served by the Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company 280.

Washington Township VFD
Pete Bowser, Chief
1124 Reesedale Road
Adrian, PA 16210
724-545-1833

They are, for all emergencies and in all ways, our closest first responders. The members are our neighbors and have invested much personal time in training, equipment maintenance, and continual fundraising, so if you can lend a hand in any way, they can always use your help. At the very least, please support their fundraising efforts.

For more information, give them a call or visit them on Facebook.

AMBULANCE SERVICE

Ambulance service to Washington Township residents is provided by two Ambulance Companies: Kittanning No. 6 EMS in Kittanning and Sugarcreek Ambulance Service in Sugarcreek. Kittanning No. 6 serves the southern part of Washington Township, while Sugarcreek serves the northern part.

Kittanning No 6 EMS

Kittanning No 6 was founded in 1902, while Sugarcreek Ambulance Service has been in business since 1975.

Sugarcreek EMS

Funding for ambulance service is primarily through patients’ health insurance but also through donations, state funds, when available, and memberships. Although most health insurance covers emergency transport, ambulance service memberships can help defray some of the out-of-pocket expenses associated with these services.

POLICE

Washington Township does not have a municipal police department and so relies entirely on the Pennsylvania State Police for all criminal, traffic, and public safety proceedings.  The township pays no additional fees for these services.

Although using the PA State Police (PSP) can save the township a big expense, using the PSP leaves service gaps.  State police officers are widely dispersed and not assigned to a specific municipality.  Response times are slower, and the PSP cannot enforce local ordinances, like curfews or parking restrictions.  They also don’t respond to fire or EMS calls, as local police often do.

Troop D, headquartered in Butler, is responsible for policing Armstrong County as well as Butler, Beaver, Lawrence, Mercer, and parts of northeastern Allegheny Counties.  One of Troop D’s six stations is located in Kittanning.  This Kittanning station conducts Child Safety Seat Checks on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.  For more information on this, as well as Camp Cadet and Sunny Day Camp, contact the Kittanning station.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT & PUBLIC SAFETY

While natural disasters, emergencies, or unexpected attacks cannot be controlled, we can be prepared and take action now to protect ourselves and our families.

Emergency Management in Pennsylvania is governed by Title 35, The Emergency Services Code. Under Title 35, every county, city, borough, town, and township in the Commonwealth is required to adhere to certain emergency management-related standards.

Key Provisions of the PA Emergency Services Code

  • Establish a local emergency management organization.
  • Appoint an Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) to oversee planning, training, and preparation during non-diaster times, and to act as the coordinator in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during times of disasters.
  • Prepare and maintain an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). An EOP establishes the overall authority, roles, and functions performed during incidents. It also seeks to prevent and minimize injury and damage caused by the disaster and allows for a prompt and effective response in consonance with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Plan.
  • Establish, equip, and staff an Emergency Operators Center (EOC).
  • Provide Emergency Training.
  • Organize and prepare all locally available manpower and equipment necessary for disaster emergency readiness.
  • Implement precautionary measures to mitigate anticipated effects of disaster (i.e. flood control).
  • Cooperate and coordinate with public and private agencies in achieving any purpose of the Emergency Management Code.
  • Provide the public with information concerning disaster situations.
  • Participate in drills and exercises scheduled by the State or Federal agencies.
  • Coordinate with other political subdivisions.

In Pennsylvania, response to emergencies and disasters starts at the local level; the direction of disaster emergency management services is the responsibility of the lowest level of government affected. After local resources are overwhelmed, a higher level of government will assist.
